Troubleshooting
First off your web browser must be able to support FTP (File Transfer Protocol). Both Internet Explorer 4.0 and Netscape 4.0 and later have been tested personally and are capable of uploading files to the server.

<your user name> - The brackets and text here represent you full user name. My user name is telco1co so my login to ftp (file transfer protocol) files to the server is ftp://telco1co@olemac.net

I keep getting a page that says 'unable to connect to the server' or 'page not available' what is wrong?! - One of two things have changed in the in the security or advanced configuration of your web browser not allowing you to ftp to our server. In your internet explorer, click ‘tools’ at the top of the page then ‘internet options’ click the ‘Security’ tab and the ‘Default Level’ button at the bottom of that window, then click the ‘Advanced’ tab at the top of that window and the ‘Restore Defaults’ at the bottom of that window, click the ‘OK’ button. Then try the FTP again.

I don't understand how to 'move' or 'drag' my files into the browser window? - By left clicking, and holding down the button, on the file you want to upload to the server, you can move the file around. You can also right click on the file you wish to transfer onto the server and choose copy from the menu that appears. Then right click in the white space of the window your browser is in and choose paste from the menu that appears.

Okay, I uploaded the files fine but I cant find my webpage!? - Type olemac.net/~<your user name> in the address bar of your browser. The ~ (tilde) symbol is created by holding down the <shift> key and pressing the key just left of the number one on your keyboard.

I see where my web page is SUPPOSED to be but still just see the default page?? You need to make sure the page you want to be seen is named index.html . To change a file name in the server follow steps 1 through 3 above to ftp back into the server, right click the old index.html and choose to delete it. Then right click on the file you want to be the main page and choose to Rename it. Call it index.html.

Why do I see my page but all the pictures I had in there show up as small red x's or question marks? - This is a very common problem for web designers, every picture in a web page has an SRC (source) command for it, it tells the page where to find the picture in your files. I recommend that beginners have their page and its pictures and graphics on the same file level. Two examples are the olemac.net picture above and the horizontal lines in this page. Their source is <filename>.gif where <filename> is the name of the picture, .gif is the type of file it is.

I have NO idea how to build a webpage! - Many of the word processing software programs (Word, WordPerfect are some examples) can automatically convert text files to HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language the 'official' language of web page design). You can often do a Save As and choose html as the file type (look in your . There are also Many software packages available for purchase on the internet or where software is sold. You can also download trial versions (shareware) and some freeware programs that can help you build stunning web pages. I have used two different software packages. Hotdog, which can be downloaded for a free trial at http://www.sausage.com and FrontPage, which I purchased at a computer store in Joplin. A third option is there are individuals that will build web pages for you.. at a cost. You also can go to your favorite search site (Yahoo, Lycos, AltaVista) and find literally thousands of pages offering help in building web pages.. everything from free pictures and introductions to html... too professional page designers and marketing consultants. I say try it yourself... building a web page and be fun and challenging!! As time allows I will be building a links page and will post some helpful sites.

That covers the basics of web pages, remember 'If you build it, they will come.' (and if they don't come on their own... you can point them the way)
